Miss Molly Muggins McHurdy Gurdy's Day
“Gurdy, get ready to hit that button, will ya?”
The short-haired domestic tabby looked up uninterestedly then squinted and stretched out on the flight panel. Shown on the ship’s display, the space station stood in the distance, a massive metallic structure that seemed to stretch on forever. At its center, two giant launchers stood tall like the arms of an ancient atlatl, ready to fling spear-shaped rockets into the vast expanse of space. The station was a marvel of engineering, with sleek lines and a futuristic design that seemed to glow in the light of the stars.
As the pilot approached the waystation, he could see the intricate details of the launchers. Each one was made of dusty metal that protruded from a central axis. The arms of the launchers were thick and muscular with hydraulic pistons, tapering down to a point where the spear-shaped rockets were loaded. The rockets themselves were sleek and deadly, with sharp edges and a pointed tip that seemed to glint in the darkness.
The ship maneuvered itself until it became the point of one of the rocket spears. He could feel the energy emanating from the station into the hull, a palpable force that seemed to hum through the air of the ship. It was as if the station was alive, a great beast waiting to unleash upon the cosmos.
He reached over and pressed the button in question, the feline having chosen mutiny. Alex had to wait two seconds and press it twice again to confirm. Most of the buttons on the ship had this feature. It was designed to prevent errant paw presses from sending it into the sun’s gravity well. The plastic covers of most spaceship panels were okay around dogs, but cats tended to poke around.
As he watched, the launchers began to move, the arms slowly swinging back in preparation for launch. The sound was deafening as the engines roared to life, the force of the launch pushing him back as the rocket soared into space.
It was a sight to behold in his rearview mirror, the launcher disappearing into the distance, his ship leaving behind a trail of fire and smoke from the attached rocket to boost the launch. The space station stood tall and proud, a symbol of humanity's boundless ambition and determination to reach for the stars.
This was Miss Molly Muggins McHurdy Gurdy’s fourth time to the asteroid belt. They were now on the way home to EML4 with a load of ice. She hopped off the panel, pressing buttons but not choosing to do so in the proper 1-2 sequence. Laziest cat in space, Alex thought to himself.
